"through empathy, a story unfolds." We curated this installation of contemporary photographs in mirror's architecture firm, featuring 10 international artists from our community.
Our curation for mirror's office responds to the calm yet strict details of the interior. Elevating the workspace, the photographs explore the theme of empathy and kinship. The vibrant compositions and pop hues create accents within mirror’s minimalistic office space, highlighting ideas of creativity and empathy that are key to the company values. mirror's office has a distinctive atmosphere, both identifiable and neutral, essential and toned-down. The artworks hang harmoniously, crafting a balanced backdrop for the workspace. The photographs selected resonate through their intimacy and emotional relation both to their subjects and to the viewer. To deepen create connections between mirror. and local artists we presented artworks from both our Munich-based and global community: Martina Borsche, Vincent Forstenlechner, Katia Ilina, Anqi Li, Justus Lemm, Manuel Nieberle, Nora Obergeschwandner, Nikos Papangelis, Yurian Quintanas Nobel, and Lilika Strezoska.
Martina Borsche (*1988 in Vermont, USA) is an American-German photographer. Her work focuses on long-term projects that work as anthropological studies of her immediate surrounding and community. She completed her BA in international relations at Boston University in 2011 and received her MA in European Fine Art Photography from the Istituto Europeo di Design Madrid. She lives and works in Munich, Germany.
Vincent Forstenlechner (*1996 in Salzburg, Austria) is a visual artist who currently lives and works in Vienna. His work mainly consists of long-term photographic series. Within his projects he is aiming at developing narratives that explore the connection between memory, identity and place. In particular,he focuses on documenting the changes in landscapes and built environments that shape our society.
Katya Ilina (*1990 in Perm, USSR) is a London-based artist, photographer and filmmaker. Her works explore themes of identity, human experience and gender. Katya has exhibited in the UK, France, Canada, and South Korea. In 2021, she won the third prize at The National Portrait Gallery's Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize. She studied image arts at Toronto Metropolitan University (Canada).
Anqi Li (*1994 in Xi’an, China) lives and works in Germany. She retains exceptional balance and hybrid between staged photography and fine art photography. Li deploys the visual language of cinematic narrative in her art creation by applying minimal set-up, but delivers sophisticated scenarios and tension.
Justus Lemm (*1993 in Essen, Germany) is a photographer based in Berlin, Germany. He recently completed his studies at the Ostkreuzschule of Photography. His graduation project, "Lithics," delved into places and materials closely linked to early human history. Serving as a research-based, speculative documentary work, it explored questions surrounding the origins of human behavior, our interaction with the world, and the fragility of human existence.
Manuel Nieberle (*1993 in Marktoberdorf, Germany). The Allgäu Alps surrounding his native city quickly fascinated him and nurtured him to document the landscape. He studied Photography and received his BA at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich. He's now based between Berlin and Munich, working as a freelance photographer. His work mainly focuses on portraiture, documentary and fine arts.
Nora Obergeschwandner (*1981 in Graz, Austria) is a lens-based artist based in Vienna. She focuses on portrait photography and social documentary work. She seeks to explore the relationship between the photographer and portrait sitter, as well as the complex dynamics between individuals. Her works have been exhibited mainly in Austria and the UK.
Nikos Papangelis (*1983 in Thessaloniki, Greece) is a lens-based artist currently living in Athens. He studied history and archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He also holds an M.A. in filmmaking from Goldsmiths, University of London and an M.A. in Photography and Visual Language from AKTO / Middlesex University. His work has been presented in various publications and festivals.
Yurian Quintanas Nobel (*1983 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands) grew up in Catalonia, where he is now based. In his personal projects he uses photography as a tool to get closer to the intangible, to the oddities of life and to narrate things that are difficult to explain with words. To construct his images, he uses everyday objects and mundane materials, to establish a direct contact between creation and reality, between rationality and imagination.
Lilika Strezoska (*1994 in Macedonia) is currently residing in Berlin. Soon after discovering the world of photography, her identity became intertwined with who she is as a photographer. Relating to herself always means to relate to her own photographic ouvre, and viceversa. For her, being captivated by something in the person she is shooting is essential in order to picture a great photo. Like a spark generated by two elements suddenly in conflict.
